'The Mandalorian': Werner Herzog & Giancarlo Espisito Officially Join The Cast Of 'Star Wars' Series

In September, while promoting “Meeting Gorbachev,” filmmaker (and sometimes-actor) Werner Herzog revealed he would be filming for a “big film franchise” under the code-name “Huckleberry.” At the time, guesses ranged anywhere from a “Star Wars” film to “Top Gun 2.” But now, thanks to a new announcement from Disney, we know exactly what “Huckleberry” actually is.

Herzog said at the time that he would soon act in “a big franchise film, about which I’m not supposed to say anything.” He continued, “ I can only say the title. The code name is ‘Huckleberry.’ For god’s sake, that’s only a cover.”

It appears that Herzog was partially wrong with his assessment, as the “film” he was acting in is actually a live-action “Star Wars” TV series, titled “The Mandalorian.” Today, Disney announced the full cast for the highly-anticipated series that is set to launch with the Disney+ streaming service in late-2019. Joining Herzog in the cast, officially, are previously reported actors Pedro Pascal (as the titular hero), Gina Carano, Nick Nolte, and Carl Weathers. New names include Giancarlo Esposito, of “Breaking Bad” fame, Omid Abtahi (“American Gods“), and Emily Swallow (“Supernatural“).

The Mandalorian is set to launch exclusively on Disney+ streaming service in 2019.

Here’s the synopsis for the series:

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.
