Constance Wu Doesn't Want To Work On A 'Star Wars' Film: "It's Golden Shackles"

After a starring role in the hit rom-com “Crazy Rich Asians,” and subsequently her first Golden Globe nomination this morning, Constance Wu is on the verge of becoming a force in Hollywood. The actress, who before ‘CRA’ was probably best known for her TV work, is going to have a lot of offers come across her desk. And thanks to a new interview, we know one job she’ll likely turn down.

As part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Felicity Jones was able to sit down with Wu to talk about her career and the future. Considering Jones’ flirtation with the “Star Wars” franchise, having starred in ‘Rogue One,’ she posed the question to Wu as to whether or not the actress would be interested in venturing off into the galaxy far, far away.

“I probably wouldn’t be into it,” said Wu. “Because for those movies, I feel like you have to be stuck in a long contract. I want to take roles that challenge me in different ways every year.”

Wu continued by explaining that working on “Fresh Off the Boat,” she’s learned that she doesn’t want to be tied down to one role for an extended period of time. “I’m ready for something new, so thinking about that makes me feel like it’s golden shackles,” said the actress.

However, when the question was posed to Jones, the ‘Rogue One’ actress said the opposite. She explained, “I loved playing that character so I actually, in an opposite way, I would really like to have more consistency and come back and bring Jyn back. I would actually like that for a couple of years.”

Obviously, there’s only the option for a prequel for Jyn Erso, considering the end of ‘Rogue One.’ But as fans of the franchise know, if there’s anything that Lucasfilm likes to do, it’s make prequels.
