Update: Mark Wahlberg Talks About His Role In 'The Lovely Bones'

Mark Wahlberg took time out of promoting his upcoming film, “Max Payne” to discuss his role as the emotional tortured father in the adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel “The Lovely Bones,” a project we haven’t heard anything about in recent months.

Wahlberg plays the father of a 14 year-old girl who is brutally rapped and murdered, who continues to watch her family from heaven as the deal with her loss.

“The only thing, again, I was worried about was dealing with the subject matter and having to go to that place, which is also why “Max Payne” was such a great release afterwards, because the other side of me would want to go out and wreak havoc on whoever was responsible, and I got to do that through this film.”
Wahlberg also talked about how his acting style doesn’t let him become divorced from the emotional difficult material. “I’m not one of those Shakespearean actors that thinks about the color blue or goes to that place or thinks about that place when I wanted to hide and be alone as a kid. I have my past, which has a lot of stuff to draw from, and I have children, so I think about something horrible happening to my family. That’s why I can’t wait until the last of shooting: so I can go home and hug my kids and get those thoughts out of my head.”
“The Lovely Bones” has had a turbulent production, with the original script by Lynne Ramsey scrapped and Peter Jackson taking over, transforming it from a small indie flick to a big studio picture, only to have Ryan Gosling drop out days before shooting was to begin (he would be replaced by Wahlberg). Despite the setbacks, principal photography is supposedly finished and the film is being edited and having the special effects added in. “The Lovely Bones” is set to be released in fall 2009.

Update: However, in an article written on October 9 by Anne Thompson, the Variety scribe said “Lovely Bones,” was one of the films that was left up in the air with the whole Dreamworks/Paramount split.

“One of the most prominent talents caught in the middle of the confusion is Peter Jackson, who pacted to do his $65 million adaptation of Alice Sebold’s “The Lovely Bones” for DreamWorks following a heated auction. Now, DreamWorks is leaving his movie behind, one of the many abandoned children in the messy divorce from Paramount. Jackson screened his cut of the movie, which is set for release in late 2009, for Paramount last week. They’re in charge of it now.”

What does that mean for ‘Lovely Bones’? Maybe nothing. Jackson’s manager thinks all will go according to plan. “The separation of Paramount and DreamWorks notwithstanding, our impression is that the transition as it relates to ‘The Lovely Bones’ will be a smooth one,” he said. It’s a interesting article and tracks a lot of potential problems for films co-produced before the split and is definitely worth a read. Keep an eye on the developments for ‘Lovely Bones’ though, we’re sure Jackson would rather be with his boy Spielberg over at their new DreamWorks/Universal home.
