Martin Scorsese Is Still Serious About Making A New Jesus Movie & Wants To Appear In It Himself

Martin Scorsese is quickly approaching his 81st birthday, but it doesn’t sound like he has any intention of slowing down his filmmaking anytime soon. Not only is “Killers of the Flower Moon” set to arrive in October, but he’s already figuring out what he’d like to do next. And yes, the Jesus film he teased a while back is a contender.

Speaking to Time, Martin Scorsese teased some of the projects he’s looking at for potentially directing next. One of those projects is the adaptation of Marilynne Robinson’s novel, “Home.” That’s a project that has been on his radar for the better part of a decade now. Not only that, but he’s still mulling ideas for another film about Jesus Christ, this one being something he was inspired to do after meeting Pope Francis earlier this year.

“I don’t know what it’s going to be, exactly. I don’t know what you’d call it. It wouldn’t be a straight narrative,” said Scorsese about his potential Jesus project. “But there would be staged scenes. And I’d be in it.”

Though those are very vague words, it really does sound like the potential Jesus Christ film would be an interesting artistic exercise for the legendary filmmaker. And after decades of making incredible films, he’s definitely earned the right to go really experimental on a whim.

Whatever Scorsese wants to make next, there will likely be no shortage of studios looking to pay the bill. Even though “Killers of the Flower Moon” took a bit of a journey to eventually find its home, the film did land a massive budget (something Scorsese is not afraid to ask for) and a prime release date. Now, after a huge debut at Cannes, it looks like ‘Flower Moon’ is poised for a big awards season run later this year.

And if Scorsese is able to earn more trophies this year, you better believe studios will line up to work with him on something else, even if it is an experimental film about Jesus.
