Last week, news broke that Mike Figgis‘ documentary “Megadoc,” all about the making of Francis Ford Coppola‘s divisive self-funded opus “Megalopolis,” would have its world premiere at the 2025 Venice Film Festival. A behind-the-scenes look at one of the most ambitious motion pictures in recent memory? Sounds great to us, and a perfect addition to an already stacked Venice line-up.
And now Utopia‘s new teaser for the doc, Figgis’ first since 2019’s “Somebody Up There Likes Me,” gives audiences their first look at how weird the making of “Megalopolis” truly was. Granted, the preview is less than 30 seconds, but “Megadoc” runs 107 minutes, and that’s plenty of time to get intimate with Coppola’s grand (if not slightly misguided) ambitions for his film.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Megadoc,” courtesy of Utopia:
This September: A raw, fly-on-the-wall documentary about Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long journey in creating his self-financed passion project, MEGALOPOLIS. The bold and unrelenting epic returns in Mike Figgis’ portrait of Coppola’s creative process – weaving together archival material, unfiltered cast interviews, and a close-up view of how the legendary filmmaker drew from Roman history, political allegory, and his own singular vision to shape the world of Megalopolis. This isn’t a record of a production on the brink, it’s a personal memoir unfolding in real time.
Interviewees in “Megadoc” include Coppola, Eleanor Coppola, and “Megalopolis” cast members Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Nathalie Emmanuel, Dustin Hoffman, Giancarlo Esposito, Chloe Fineman, Shia LaBeouf, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Voight, Talia Shire, and Robert De Niro.
Producers on “Megadoc” Tara Li-An and James Mockoski, with Anahid Nazarian, Barrbie Osborne, and Darren Demetre serving as executive producers.
So when will “Megadoc” reach US audiences? Hopefully, right after it hits the Lido in a month or so. Watch a teaser for Figgis’ doc below.
