The “Devil’s” time is over. In a moment that’s historically rare at the box office, Lionsgate’s “Michael” returned to the top spot in the U.S. with $26.1 million and $282.7 million so far. Worldwide, the Antoine Fuqua-directed biopic has now crossed the $700 million mark for $703.8 million to date.

“Michael” was previously the top movie in the States the weekend of April 24. “The Devil Wears Prada 2” was no. 1 the following two weekends, but took in just $18 million in its third frame, down a surprising 57%. The Disney blockbuster has still made $175 million in the U.S. and a stellar $546 million worldwide.
Opening in third place was Curry Barker’s “Obsession,” which took in a fantastic $16.1 million in just 2,656 theatres and another $7 million overseas for $23 million total. That was significantly higher than the $8-10 million pre-release tracking saw less than a week ago. Acquired out of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival by Focus Features, the supernatural thriller earned strong reviews with a 77 on Metacritic and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also earned an A- from CinemaScore, a high result for a horror movie and, potentially, a sign of good word of mouth in the weeks to come. With just a $14 million acquisition cost, Focus Features is looking at a very profitable hit in the weeks ahead.
Also arriving in theaters was Black Bear’s “In The Grey” with $3 million on 2,018 screens. The Guy Ritchie-directed thriller completed production in October 2023 and spent years looking for a distributor and a release date. The movie cost reportedly $55+ million, but how much its financiers pre-sold overseas remains to be seen. With mixed to negative reviews, including a 52 on Metacritic and 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, it will likely be on VOD and out of theaters sooner rather than later.
Orion Pictures released pulled in a disappointing $2.2 million on just 1,510 screens. Aleshea Harris’ directorial debut earned rave reviews, however, with an 84 on Metacritic and a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Amazon MGM Studios marketed the film conservatively and likely won’t recoup its budget, but it’s a nice swing spotlighting a new, emerging talent. The film may have a life on Prime Video down the road.
“Mortal Kombat II” fell a big 65% from its opening weekend for just $3.6 million. The WB and New Line action flick has earned $62 million domestically and $101.2 million worldwide. Not to be outdone, “Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft” dropped a stunning 89% for just $800,000 while in 2,613 screens for a pearl-clutching $306 per screen average in its second frame. So far, the James Cameron-directed 3D concert film has earned $9.2 million in the U.S. and $25.1 million across the globe.
Another notable receipts: “The Sheep Detectives” dropped just 33% for another $9.3 million and $29.6 million in the U.S., while a re-release of “Top Gun” took in $3.1 million.
New films opening Friday include “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” and “Passenger” in wide release, while “I Love Boosters” and “Tuner” drop in limited release.
