Some will remember that back in 2022, Amazon and Henry Cavill came together with the hope of putting together some sort of plan to bring the popular “Warhammer 40K” IP to live-action with the aim of making movies and TV shows. And there is quite an impressive update: they’ve not only found a writer but are telegraphing some seriously ambitious and lofty ideas of their adaptation plans.
The U.K-based video game company Games Workshop has announced in an annual finacial report (via BBC) that veteran screenwriter/director Mike Flanagan (“Doctor Sleep”) is set to write the project, although it’s sort of unclear from the announcement if this will be a series or a feature film; however, United Artists has been brought into the fold (leading us to believe a movie is indeed on the table here). They’re using the phrasing of Flanagan penning a bunch of scripts for a cinematic universe, and adding that Cavill is still attached, after some had suspected he might have moved on.

Other than that, we’re sort of in the dark and will likely have to wait for Amazon/United Artists to share further information and what corner of the franchise will be explored here. “Warhammer 40k” blends fantasy and sci-fi elements with an ultra-violent, militarized universe and off-world colonies, expanding the popular tabletop game into all sorts of media, including video games; “Space Marine 2” was one of the more recent efforts, with pretty impressive graphics and gameplay.
Flanagan is best known for his horror work such as “Doctor Sleep” (a sequel to “The Shining“), and, most recently, is behind a modern-set “Carrie” remake series, along with writing DC Studios‘ “Clayface,” featuring the body-horror Batman villain. His latest feature is the Scarlett Johansson-led “The Exorcist: Martyrs,” and he’s looking to take a different approach to a new version of Stephen King‘s “The Mist.”
Cavill’s established working relationship with Amazon features a high-profile remake of “Highlander” with “John Wick” franchise helmer Chad Stahelski behind it (that pic may lead to sequels and spinoff shows). He’s also part of the cast of the upcoming live-action “Voltron” movie directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. Amazon is doing its best to deliver subscribers quality video game adaptations with “Fallout,” “Tomb Raider,” and the “God of War” series.
