Lately, Netflix has been seen by many as the dumping ground for studio films. Whether it’s the mediocre “The Cloverfield Paradox,” released as a stunt on Super Bowl Sunday, or the amazing “Annihilation,” Netflix has been buying up films that studios just are scared to release. It looks like the latest film to get the Netflix release treatment is “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.”
According to Variety, Netflix has bought the distribution rights for ‘Potato Peel Society,’ and will release the film in a variety of markets, including the U.S. While the title doesn’t necessarily roll off the tongue, the film has been getting a fair amount of buzz, lately. Produced by Blueprint, responsible for the award-winning “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and starring rising star Lily James, ‘Potato Peel Society’ now joins the list of films that are deemed too risky for studios.
The film stars James as a free-spirited writer, who forms a life-changing bond with the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, as she prepares to write about the book club in the aftermath of WWII. The film also stars Matthew Goode, Jessica Brown, Katherine Parkinson, Tom Courtenay, and Penelope Wilton. “Four Weddings and a Funeral” director Mike Newell helmed the British film.
While Studiocanal will release the film theatrically in Australia, France, and Germany, Netflix will debut the film in North America, Latin America, Italy, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia. Variety reports that the film will see a theatrical release in other territories, as well.
Netflix has been making a big push to grab high-profile films, with varying degrees of success. While it seems like “Annihilation” was a good choice for the streaming service, their Netflix Originals tend to fall on the not-so-great to bad part of the quality spectrum. Perhaps, ‘Potato Peel Society’ will buck that trend and give Netflix a much-needed feature film hit.
It’s unknown when Netflix will release the film, but it’s scheduled for release in the UK on April 20.
