Mark Hamill Reveals His Pick For Young Luke In A 'Star Wars' Prequel

With ‘Rogue One’ and the upcoming ‘Solo’ (not to mention the infamous Prequel Trilogy), Lucasfilm has never been shy about filling in gaps in “Star Wars” history with prequel films. While the argument can definitely be made whether or not this is a worthwhile endeavor, the truth is anything with the “Star Wars” brand attached to it has been incredibly popular. In an interview with Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker, Variety asked him about the idea of a Luke prequel.

“It depends on what point in Luke’s life that you would have him be in the movie. Because at first, I’m thinking … the whole point of Luke was that he was bored silly with his life. All he was doing was bullseyeing wamp rats in his T-16,” said the actor.

However, if there was a Luke film, who would the actor want to see play a younger Luke? At first, Hamill brought up a fan-favorite fantasy casting, Sebastian Stan. But as Hamill points out, Stan is “way more handsome than I am.” Plus, there’s the question of the age, which is why Hamill thinks a much younger actor might fit the bill better.

“Now, if they could do now where they have five or six plots and you’re cutting around what’s going on all around him and they keep cutting back to a really young Luke, I thought, ‘The one I love is Jacob Tremblay,’” said Hamill.

As much as Tremblay would be a fine choice, Hamill’s first inclination is probably the best. A young Luke story is perhaps the worst idea for a future “Star Wars” film. Unless Lucasfilm is searching for a lead in an educational film about moisture farming, there doesn’t seem like much of a story surrounding Luke pre-‘A New Hope.’ That being said, Tremblay could probably kill it as a bored farmer dreaming of piloting ships and fighting battles.

But are “Star Wars” that desperate for prequels? This sounds about as ill-advised as the ‘Jabba the Hutt’ origin film.
