Got a Tip?

New Details About Princess Leia, Supreme Leader Snoke, And Maz Kanata In ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Emerge

Lupita Nyong'o covered in C.G.I. tracking dots for role as Maz Kanata in'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'With Disney keeping a firm grip on who can see "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" early (basically, nobody outside the studio), nothing is going be spoiled about the movie before opening day, barring Harrison Ford getting raging drunk and doing a Periscope session. So, we’ll just have to decipher what we can from the clues that are emerging, most recently, in EW

First up, among the old school returning faces will be Carrie Fisher‘s Princess Leia, but Luke Skywalker’s sister will have a new name. “She’s referred to as General,” J.J. Abrams said. “But … there’s a moment in the movie where a character sort of slips and calls her ‘Princess.’”

“The stakes are pretty high in the story for her, so there’s not much goofing around where Leia’s concerned,” he added. “But it felt historic to have her, especially with Harrison, back in scenes together. I can only imagine the baggage that they bring to it, I’m just a fan who loves this stuff, but they’ve been living with it — and living in it — since ’77.”

However, while they are carrying the baggage, the vintage cast members are passing it onto the shoulders of the new school, with Lupita Nyong’o and Andy Serkis featuring in key roles. And in the case of the latter, who plays Supreme Leader Snoke, a few new details about his villainous character have emerged.

“Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful,” Serkis explained. “Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.”
“The scale of him…He is large. He appears tall," the actor added about his character’s CGI-created appearance, which is still under wraps. "And also just the facial design – you couldn’t have gotten there with prosthetics. It’s too extreme. Without giving too much away at this point, he has a very distinctive, idiosyncratic bone structure and facial structure. You could never have done it [in real life.]”

Another character yet unseen, except as a very small figure on the on official poster, is Nyong’o’s Max Kanata. “Her history is that she was a pirate for a long time,” she teased. “She’s lived over a thousand years. She’s had this watering hole for about a century, and it’s like another bar that you’d find in a corner of the ‘Star Wars’ universe.” I suppose it isn’t a franchise of Mos Eisley’s Cantina….
