What does the American dream really mean? For one woman it comes with unimaginable consequences in the new film “No One Gets Out Alive.” Using otherworldly qualities helps the project tap into some of today’s most challenging topics as it engages viewers. The adaptation of Adam Nevill’s novel looks at a person trapped in a world that seems unfamiliar, all the while delving into the darkest of supernatural themes. This is Nevill’s second novel to be adapted, as 2017’s “Ritual” also went to Netflix.

The project’s script comes from Fernanda Coppel and Jon Croker; both writers rely on their backgrounds in drama as well as horror to tell the story. Coppel previously worked with series such as “Queen of the South” and “How to Get Away with Murder” while Croker’s most notable credit is “The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death.” Filmmaker Santiago Menghini’s shorts extend to genre titles like “Intruders” and the documentary “Voyagers.”

Cristina Rodlo stars as Ambar, the woman at the center of this startling tale. The actress, whose work includes “Too Old to Die Young,” “68 Whiskey” and “The Terror,” is well-versed in ensemble dramatic projects. With ‘Alive’ she’s growing that resume to include a film that relies on her to carry its entire narrative. She’s joined by “Ozark” and “The Outsider” actor Marc Menchaca. The actor has proven to be more than capable of delivering the level of drama needed for this pivotal role. He’s also featured on the upcoming series “The White House Plumbers.”
