Watch The Emotional Oscars Speeches By Olivia Colman, Alfonso Cuarón, Lady Gaga, & More [Oscars 2019]

The Oscars ceremony is largely seen as the crown jewel for awards shows every year. With the biggest names in Hollywood all vying for the gold trophies, which represent the highest honor many of these filmmakers and stars will achieve in their careers, it’s no surprise that emotions take over when they hear their name called. And last night was no different, with folks like Rami Malek, Lady Gaga, Alfonso Cuarón, and of course, Olivia Colman bringing tears, laughter, and incredible emotion to their acceptance speeches.

Perhaps surprisingly, outside of Olivia Colman’s mixture of sincerity, humility, and laser-focused wit, an argument could be made that some of the best speeches came from categories you might not expect. Names like Ruth Carter (Best Costume Design for “Black Panther”), Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart (Best Production Design for “Black Panther”), and Rayka Zehtabchi and Melissa Berton (Best Doc Short for “Period. End of Sentence”) stole the show with their passionate and heartfelt speeches. The latter duo had perhaps the line of the night, saying, “I can’t believe a film about menstruation won an Oscar!”

Of course, you’d be hard-pressed to forget the political messaging that dominated the speech of Spike Lee’sBlacKkKlansman” Adapted Screenplay win (which Trump deemed a “racist” speech), and the pro-Mexico speech by Cuarón.
