Back in 2020, Oscar Isaac gave the “Star Wars” universe a great kiss-off when he quipped that he wouldn’t do any other films set in a galaxy far, far away “unless I need another house or something.” He was just as blunt about “Star Wars” on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival last year, too. When asked why he wanted to star in Paul Schrader‘s “The Card Counter,” he replied, “I’ve been in green-screen space land for quite a few years and I was desperate to do a character study.” Enough said, Mr. Isaac.

But now, it looks like Isaac’s harsh view of his time in the “Star Wars” universe may have softened. Variety reports that in a recent SiriusXM interview, the actor stated that he’s open to another go as Rebel pilot Poe Dameron as long as “there was a great story and a great director.” Does that sound like a guy burnt out from being in green-screen space land for too long? Surely not.
“I don’t know. I’m open to anything. You never know,” Isaac said when asked about returning to “Star Wars” in some capacity. “I have no real feeling one way or another. I’m open to any good story. Time is the one thing that becomes challenging…as you get older and kids and all that. Where do [movies] fit in? If there was a great story and a great director and [Lucasfilm president] Kathy [Kennedy] came to me and was like, ‘I have this great idea,’ then I’m so open to it.” That’s a dramatic turn-around for an actor very open about his aversion to making movies the size of a typical “Star Wars” project.
Maybe Isaac’s time working on “Moon Knight” for Marvel Studios changed his mind about the “Star Wars” universe. Since the series debuted on Disney+ in March, the actor has been vocal about how much he enjoyed making the series. “Often on these big movies it can feel like you’re building the plane on the runway,” Isaac told Empire in another interview. “The idea of getting back to “handmade” films, character studies…I was desperate for that feeling. [“Moon Knight”] felt handmade. And it’s the first legitimate Marvel character-study since “Iron Man.” I thought, ‘Maybe I can hijack this thing. Maybe this is the chance to do something really fucking nutty on a major stage.’”
It feels off-base to call a Marvel property “handmade,” but Moon Knight is the most bizarre MCU character by a wide margin. Isaac possibly felt like he had more freedom as an actor on “Moon Knight” than he ever did as Poe Dameron. And maybe Isaac’s eagerness to return to his “Moon Knight’ role also rekindled his enthusiasm (or at least his tolerance) for the “Star Wars” franchise.
Will fans see Poe Dameron onscreen in a new “Star Wars” movie soon? From the sounds of Isaac, if there’s a good idea, he’d be on board.
