It was officially announced back in December that Lucasfilm hired director Patty Jenkins (“Wonder Woman,” “Monster“) to helm their next big feature film, “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron,” their first big-screen release since “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
The Rogue Squadron is a group of crack X-Wing pilots who got a string of stories told with Legends to get their own novels, comic books, and video games. However, Jenkins has made it clear that the project will be original and not directly based on existing material but stopped short of saying where it takes place in the “Star Wars” timeline.
When “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” was announced, a writer wasn’t mentioned, but The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that up-and-coming American screenwriter Matthew Robinson (“The Invention of Lying“) will be penning the script.
Robinson has been working on a handful of genre productions recently with “Love & Monsters,” the upcoming “Little Shop of Horrors“ remake, “Dora & The Lost City of Gold,“ and Doug Liman‘s “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel that’ll hopefully be able to move forward having Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

Jenkins is also attached to direct Gal Gadot in “Wonder Woman 3,” but “Rogue Squadron” will go in front of cameras first.
Prep stages have already begun as filming is set to take place in the United Kingdom with “Wonder Woman” production designer Aline Bonetto reuniting with Jenkins. Production will likely begin in 2022 as Disney has given “Rogue Squadron” a release date of December 22, 2023.
Other “Star Wars” films in the works include untitled projects from Taika Waititi (“Jojo Rabbit,” “The Mandalorian,” “Thor: Love & Thunder,” “Thor: Ragnarok“) a trilogy from Rian Johnson (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”), and writer Michael Waldron (“Loki,” “Rick & Morty,” “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness“) is reportedly working on the Kevin Feige film.
