Got a Tip?

Paul Thomas Anderson Unfolds ‘Phantom Thread’ In 33-Minute Masterclass

The best part about a new film by Paul Thomas Anderson — besides the actual movie, which in this case is the terrific “Phantom Thread“— is getting to spend time with the director. Okay, we don’t get to personally hang with Anderson, but the duties of promoting a film require the director to chat to many outlets. So it means we get a plethora of interviews and chatter, before Anderson once again goes into creative hibernation until his next feature.

The director’s latest stop was at the Cinémathèque Française in France, where he participated in a half-hour masterclass. The questions are asked in French, but the answers are in English so it’s not too hard to follow along. As always, it’s great to listen to Anderson, who starts off this conversation explaining how they landed on the title “Phantom Thread,” and what it actually means. However, he admits that he’s not sure how it applies to his movie specifically.

Give the conversation a whirl below, and if you still haven’t seen “Phantom Thread,”don’t waste a moment and go see it now.
