The last time Netflix attempted the tell the story about the early days of hip hop, they delivered the troubled and expensive “The Get Down.” This time around, they approach the era from a different, and more affordable angle with “Roxanne Roxanne.” The film is fresh off its debut at the Sundance Film Festival where it was warmly received, and now it’s ready to put a seriously fierce step into your spring.
Starring Chanté Adams (who won the 2017 Sundance Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Performance), Nia Long, Mahershala Ali, Elvis Nolasco, Kevin Phillips, Shenell Edmonds, and Adam Horovitz, and written and directed by Michael Larnell, “Roxanne Roxanne” tells the story about the birth of a hip hop legend. Here’s the official synopsis:
Life is a battle.
In the early 1980s, the most feared battle MC in Queens, New York, was a fierce teenage girl with the weight of the world on her shoulders. At the age of 14, Lolita “Roxanne Shante” Gooden was well on her way to becoming a Hip-Hop legend as she hustled to provide for her family while defending herself from the dangers of the streets.
Featuring a score by RZA, “Roxanne Roxanne” hits Netflix on March 23rd.
