Romain Gavras‘ latest flick “Sacrifice” is heading to Netflix in the near future, and the genre-bending project was co-written with Will Arbery. The main cast is pretty damn impressive, with Anya Taylor-Joy (“Lucky”), Chris Evans (“Avengers: Doomsday”), and French actor Vincent Cassel (“Shrouds”) playing a trio of lead characters.
A new trailer has found its way online (see below; the second one isn’t in English, mind you) and showcases some of the fantastic and striking visuals from director of photography Matias Boucard (“Athena”), along with some stellar production design from Arnaud Roth.
Here is the official logline for the pic via the TIFF website:
The attendees at an environmental conference/benefit in Greece seem more like the guests at an A-list Hollywood party than a serious intellectual summit. There’s actor Mike Tyler (Evans), the oblivious star of numerous successful action movies, who’s now undergoing an existential crisis. He hopes to deliver a rousing speech demanding a real response to climate change, and to reset his brand in the process. Braken (Cassel), a fusion of your least favorite billionaires, is present to muster support for a highly questionable deep-sea mining effort targeting essential minerals. Complicating their efforts is Joan (Taylor-Joy), the leader of a doomsday eco-cult. She and her acolytes are convinced the only way to prevent the catastrophic, world-ending eruption of the huge volcano burbling off the coast is to offer up suitably famous sacrifices.
A stacked supporting cast also features John Malkovich as Joan’s father, Salma Hayek Pinault as Mrs. Braken, and appearances by Ambika Mod and musician/actress Charli xcx.
The Playlist reviewed the movie during our coverage at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival; check out the trailer below. That’s not it, as Robert Walak, Jacob Perlin, Gavras, Gregory Jankilevitsch, Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowskam and Giorgos Karnavas are part of the movie’s producer team, as the film hails from ICONOCLAST, Mid March Media, Film4, and Heretic.
It had been scooped up by Netflix earlier in the year, but we’re still waiting to learn when general audiences and subscribers will be able to view it on the streaming service.
