‘Athena’ & ‘Sacrifice’ Director Romain Gavras Tackling Brazen Daytime French Crown Jewels Heist With ‘Hands On The Louvre’ Adaptation

Unless you were living under a rock, you’ll remember back in October of the extremely daring daytime robbery by thieves stealing the French crown jewels at The Louvre in only seven minutes (referred to as the “heist of the century”) that shocked the world and exposed a lacking response by security. That is now going to be the subject of a new action movie coming from acclaimed French director Romain Gavras (“Athena”), who is now set to tackle an action film focusing on those true-crime events.

The news hailing from Le Film Français (spotted by Vogue Adria) has revealed that Gavras will helm a script he co-wrote alongside Simon Jacquet (“L’Amour ouf”), and Mourad Winter (“L’Amour, c’est surcoté”). Iconoclast Films is also on board the gestating Paris-set action film, which will be based on the investigative book “Main basse sur le Louvre” (“Hands on the Louvre”) by Jean-Michel Décugis, Jérémie Pham-Lê, and Nicolas-Charles Torrent, which is going to be published by Flammarion on May 27.

A synopsis of the book courtesy of Flammarion:

On October 19, 2025, in less than four minutes, a meticulously prepared commando stole the Crown Jewels of France from the Apollo Gallery at the Louvre. An extraordinary heist that is making headlines around the world. It’s a race against time that begins: we must find this treasure as quickly as possible, before it disappears forever. Secret documents, a sensational report, sources closest to the investigation, and the authors had access to unpublished elements to immerse themselves behind the scenes of the investigations carried out by the police. Very quickly, the trail of a gang of clumsy burglars emerges. How were the suspects, four friends from Seine-Saint-Denis, able to neutralize the security systems of the largest museum in the world? And why did the Louvre’s management ignore the warnings it received for so long? But above all, where are these priceless gems hidden?

There aren’t any names currently attached to the untitled movie, but considering Gavras worked with Vincent Cassel (“The Shrouds”) on “Our Day Will Come,” ‘The World is Yours,” and “Sacrifice,” we wouldn’t be all that shocked if the veteran French heavyweight is courted for a key role. The actor’s long-standing history within the crime and gangster genre is hard to overlook with other projects under his belt, such as “La Haine,” “Mesrine,” “Dobermann,” “The Crimson Rivers,” “Eastern Promises,” “Trance,” and he even featured in Steven Soderbergh‘s “Ocean’s” movies as the ego-driven thief, The Night Fox (fingers crossed he’s returning for “Ocean’s 14“)

The filmmaker’s latest effort, a thriller titled “Sacrifice,” boasts an impressive Hollywood cast featuring Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Evans, Salma Hayek, Cassel, Ambika Mod, Sam Richardson, Charli XCX, Yung Lean, and John Malkovich. While the movie premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival (where The Playlist reviewed the movie), we’re still waiting to learn when the movie is heading to U.S. theaters.

While it’s way too early for a concrete date to be mentioned, there is an expectation that the movie could be ready to be released in theaters sometime in 2029. We’ll certainly be keeping an eye on the project, which could easily adopt the title “Hands on the Louvre” from the book they’re using for source material.
