‘Green Room’s’ Jeremy Saulnier Says Upcoming Film ‘Hold The Dark’ Features His “Highest Body Count” To Date

If you haven’t heard the name of filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier before, you definitely need to drop everything and watch his previous films ASAP. “Blue Ruin” and “Green Room” are two of the most interesting indie films of the last several years and have firmly planted Saulnier as one of the brightest up and coming filmmakers around.

With his first two films leaning heavily into the dark and bloody, it’s surprising that the director says that his next project “Hold the Dark” might be his darkest and bloodiest work yet. The film follows a wolf expert that ventures to the Alaskan village of Keelut to investigate the disappearances of three children, suspected to be the result of wolf activity. “Westworld” actor Jeffrey Wright stars as the expert Russell Core.

“This film has so many firsts for me,” Saulnier said (via EMPIRE). “It has my record number of intimate dialogue scenes and my highest body count. It has my first war scene, my first aerial sequence, my first time working extensively with animals. So in that regard it was a huge challenge.”

In a first look at the film, we see actor Alexander Skarsgård’s Vernon Sloane, a member of the Keelut village, sitting with his son. Not much is known about how Skarsgård’s character fits into all of this, but judging by the filmmaker’s past, it’s safe to say that the gun in the image isn’t just there for show.

“Hold the Dark” is a film that was expected to have a huge premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but instead, was a victim of the feud between the festival and the film’s distributor Netflix. Now, the film will have a premiere on the streaming service on September 28.
