Like it or not, “Scream” is being revived. And right now, we don’t know what that means. Is the new film a reboot? A sequel? A complete remake? It’s unclear. However, according to the star of the original “Scream” film series, Neve Campbell, the new filmmakers are interested in seeing if she is willing to return to the slasher franchise. So, it looks like we might be in for a “Halloween”-style rebootquel, maybe?

Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes (via People), Campbell talked about the current status of the “Scream” film, set to be directed and produced by Radio Silence (aka co-directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, along with producer Chad Villela), the team behind “Ready or Not.” According to Campbell, discussions have happened, but there’s no definite plan to have her “Scream” character, Sidney Prescott, return to the franchise.
“The timing’s a bit challenging because of COVID,” she said. “You know, we only started the conversation maybe a month and a half ago, so it’s going to take some time to figure out how it’s all going to work out. We’re negotiating, so we’ll see.”

Campbell revealed that the new “Scream” filmmakers, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, sent her “a very touching letter about [late former director] Wes Craven and how he was such an inspiration to them and how they really want to honor him.”
She added, “That meant a great, great deal to me. So, we’ll see. Hopefully, we can all see eye to eye on the project and find a way to make it.”
While she isn’t able to reveal any details about the new film, other than the desire to have her character return, Campbell expressed that she was originally not sure about the idea of returning to a franchise without director Wes Craven attached. But with the filmmaker sadly passing away in 2015, if the franchise is to move forward, it will be without the legendary horror director.

“I originally had been really apprehensive about doing another ‘Scream’ without Wes [Craven] because he was such a genius and he is the reason they are what they are,” she said. “But the directors who have come to me with such a great appreciation for Wes’s work, and they really want to honor it. That meant a lot to me.”
There’s no release date planned, and as the actress mentioned, COVID-19 is providing some added scheduling issues. But it does appear that “Scream” is still on track to be revived, and hopefully with Neve Campbell in the cast.
