Filmmaker Sean Durkin and A24 have reunited for “Deep Cuts” after previously working together on the heartwrenching wrestling family drama “The Iron Claw,” and four more actors have joined the California-set romantic drama based on the novel by Holly Brickley.
A casting update from Deadline reveals that those new additions to the film’s lineup include Abubakar Ali (“A House of Dynamite”), Quintessa Swindell (“Euphoria,” “Black Adam”), Gaby Hoffmann (“Girls”), and Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”).

This new group of actors will be, of course, joining previously announced leads of “Deep Cuts” such as Cailee Spaeny (“Alien: Romulus,” “Civil War”), Drew Starkey (“Queer”), and Ariela Barer (“How To Blow Up A Pipeline”), the latter was brought in to replace Odessa A’zion after her exit over casting backlash.
An official logline of the original novel from publisher Penguin Random House:
A love story about two people pulled apart by the same force that draws them together: music. It’s a Friday night in a campus bar in Berkeley, fall of 2000, and Percy Marks is pontificating about music again. Hall and Oates is on the jukebox, and Percy—who has no talent for music, just lots of opinions about it—can’t stop herself from overanalyzing the song, indulging what she knows to be her most annoying habit. But something is different tonight. The guy beside her at the bar, fellow student Joe Morrow, is a songwriter. And he could listen to Percy talk all night.
Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie of “Marty Supreme” are part of the producing team behind “Deep Cuts,” which also consists of Durkin, Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, and Jordan Tappis.
This isn’t the only upcoming project for Durkin, as he’s also behind the upcoming FX series “Seven Sisters” that features high-profile actresses Elizabeth Olsen and Cristin Milioti playing lead characters.
