In a matter of months from test footage leaking this summer, the long-developing and once thought left-for-dead "Deadpool" project got a greenlight and is now slated for release in 2016. It’s quite a turnaround for the "merc with a mouth," but there are still many questions to be answered. Mostly at issue is how the project —once seen as a wild offshoot from Fox’s mainline X-Men series— will be approached in this era of franchise interconnectivity. Well, Simon Kinberg has the answer.
Chatting with Comic Book, the writer/producer revealed the quippy character will exist in the same world as everyone’s favorite mutants. “There’s definitely a sort of overall plan that we’ve all been talking about for the X-Men universe now, and Deadpool obviously fits into that," Kinberg said. "So yeah, I guess I would say it’s part of an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel’s done with [making] a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well. The same kind of thought is going to go into these X-Men movies at Fox.”
It’s an interesting statement from Kinberg for a number of reasons, since it will likely come to bear on the decisions as to what form a "Deadpool" movie will take. It was originally conceived as an R-rated, very meta comic movie, but will that approach work when placing this movie within a bigger sphere of X-Men pictures? According to writer Rheet Reese, those choices are still being made.
“Hey, guys, no one knows yet whether Deadpool will be R or PG-13. There may not be an announcement for a long while. Hang in!” Reese said on Twitter recently.
