You know how people used to say that HBO is the premier destination for prestige TV dramas? Well, HBO might have lost a bit of that luster in recent years, but FX is more than happy to take the crown with series such as “Fargo,” “Pose,” “Atlanta,” “Mayans MC,” and the under-the-radar hit, “Snowfall.” And now, as the fourth season has just wrapped up, “Snowfall” is looking at potential awards recognition later this year.
In honor of the recent Season 4 finale of “Snowfall,” the series’ creator/showrunner Dave Andron and writer/producer Leonard Chang join The Playlist Podcast to talk about the incredible drama series, “Snowfall,” and how it seems to keep getting bigger and bigger each season, thanks to people (like us) finding it on FX on Hulu.
“Snowfall” is set in 1983 Los Angeles and tells the story of the crack epidemic that hit the city during that time. The series is told from various viewpoints, including a young drug dealer, a CIA operative, and crime bosses. And much like the rest of FX’s drama offerings, the series doesn’t pull punches as it provides a stark look at what really happened decades ago when crack was introduced to the L.A. area.
“This season is the first time that it’s gone from ‘Keep the head down and make the show we want to make’ with our partners and be happy just with that. And you kind of just hope you get to tell the story you want to tell,” said Andron about the growing success of the FX drama series. “Then it kind of takes a leap and the actors start calling you and saying, ‘This is getting a little weird. We can’t really walk down the street.’ And I guess for me it’s been really glad a grateful people are finding the show and that it’s resonating, but still just keeping your head down and making the show you want to make without the noise.”
In addition to talking about “Snowfall,” we took this opportunity to ask Dave Andron about the upcoming series that finds Timothy Olyphant possibly returning to the world of “Justified.” The new series is based on the novel “City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit” by Elmore Leonard and finds Olyphant’s “Justified” character, Raylan Givens venturing to Detroit for a new adventure.
“It’s an early Elmore Leonard crime novel called ‘City Primeval.’ And it’s of course under the ‘Justified’ banner, but it’s really a Raylan story,” explained Andron. “It’s a tribute to Elmore and ‘Where is Raylan now?’ And how do you take this gunslinger character…and how do you bring him into the modern moment that we’re in with law enforcement and the violence in law enforcement and update it and make it current while keeping the things that we love about Elmore and about ‘Justified.’”
He added, “Right now, we’re just designing it as a one-off. An 8-episode limited thing. It just picks up Raylan all these years later – Where is he? What has he learned? How has the world changed around him?”
Four seasons of “Snowfall” are available now on FX on Hulu. You can hear our entire discussion below.
