Sequels are a tough sell in the horror genre. While there are some great ones every once in a blue moon, most of them are pretty terrible, including the recently released “Halloween Kills.” So, in honor of the terrible sequel issue, this episode of The Playlist Podcast is devoted to talking about horror films that didn’t get a sequel (and didn’t need a sequel) because they’re perfect just how they are.
While we don’t claim that the films discussed are the best horror standalone films to ever exist, but these are three that we feel are often overlooked and are really great ideas if you’re looking for a last-minute Halloween binge. And boy, oh boy, do we pick three pretty different films.
First, we talk about Sam Raimi’s return to horror after spending years in the world of Marvel— 2009’s “Drag Me to Hell.” After, we discuss the meta-horror “Cabin in the Woods,” which is actually pretty related to Sam Raimi’s filmography also. And then, because I like to mix things up a bit, we debate the glorious 2016 French horror film, “Raw.”
