Whoa, here’s little nugget of info. A throwaway line at the bottom of a press release for experimental San Francisco rockers Deerhoof’s upcoming record Offend Maggie, reveals some details about the soundtrack/score to the upcoming Will Ferell/ John C. Reilly comedy “Step Brothers.”
Apparently the hoof’s drummer Greg Saunier, producer / multi-instrumentalist, Jon Brion and Wilco avante-guitarist Nels Cline are all “playing together on the film’s soundtrack,” which presumably means they recorded and wrote the score together. Update: Some details just arrived. “Step Brothers” Director Adam Mckay and Jon Brion had Cline and Saunier come into a studio a few weeks ago to record some music for the film. Some of it was improvised and some of it was already written by Brion. It’s unsure whether this material will make the cut yet, but it sounds like Brion is the principal composer on the film. Update: Indeed he is, Brion just completed work on the score on Wednesday with a reported 80-piece orchestra in tow.
Cline talked about meeting Brion and Saunier in a January 2005 piece in Junk Media and making music with them (the trio worked on the Nels Cline Singers’ album The Giant Pin released in 2004).
“Mark Flanagan at the Largo Pub in L.A. introduced Jon to me one night after a solo set. I truly knew nothing about him until my roommate started going to every one of his Friday night shows – they’re legendary. As for Greg Saunier, we have been friends doing shows together and coming to each other’s shows ever since Carla Bozulich added Deerhoof to a Scarnella gig in San Francisco about 7 years ago” (Deerhoof’s Instrumentals has a dedication to Clines).
All three of these musicians have been involved in movie score work in recent years. Brion has a long history of work with auteurs Paul Thomas Anderson (“Magonlia,” “Punch Drunk Love”) and Michel Gondry (‘Eternal Spotlight Of the Yaddayadda’) and recently wrote the score to Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, New York.” Deerhoof helped score the Weinstein company film, “Dedication” last year with composer Edward Shermur (“Sunshine”) and Cline did the leads guitar on Zooey Deschanel/ M. Ward’s (She & Him) cover of “When I Get To The Border” for the upcoming “The Go-Getter” film and (which comes out Friday).
More details as they come in. Brooklyn Electro-rockers LCD Soundsystem was featured in the original trailer so either way, there’s probably going to be some interesting indie-friendly music in the film.
