'Suicide Squad' Won't Be Released With R-Rating, Zack Snyder Talks R-Rated Cut Of 'Batman v Superman'

While one might think "Deadpool" has kicked open the gates for studios to go hog wild with R-rated superheroes, caution seems to be taking shape. Disney‘s Bob Iger stated this week that Marvel won’t be going down that road, and while Warner Bros. has already promised an R-rating for "Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice" on home video, it’s not going to be their standard operating procedure going forward. And sorry folks, that means "Suicide Squad" won’t be getting a theatrical R-rating.

“I think right now we’re going for the PG-13. I don’t know that that’s going to materially change,” producer Charles Roven told EW. “We can give that movie the edge that it needs and still maintain a PG-13.”

It makes sense. When you spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a movie, you need it to play to as wide an audience as possible to recoup those costs. "Deadpool," which cost under $60 million, had the budget to allow it go released with an R-rating, and while it certainly paid off, the success was unprecedented, and far beyond expectations. But what can we expect from the adult driven version of ‘Batman v Superman’?

It’ll be longer than the 2 hour and 31 minute theatrical cut (which Zack Snyder says actually runs 2 hours and 22 minutes, plus credits), and as you can expect, it’s going to up the intensity factor, and feature actors cut from the theatrical version including Jena Malone (“She’s definitely not Robin or Batgirl. I’m happy to say that,” the director teased), Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green, and bodybuilder C.T. Fletcher.

“And then there’s just a lot of these Easter Eggs in the Director’s Cut that I think are gonna be fun for everyone,” Snyder added. “There’s one giant one that I won’t tell you about yet that speaks to what’s gonna go on in the greater ‘Justice League‘ universe.”

If the idea of WB releasing different cuts of ‘Batman v Superman’ seems scattershot or confused, Ben Affleck says it’s a way of serving different viewers. “These movies have definitely evolved from being comic books for children aimed at kids. Now they’re the most mainstream movies made, the most successful, the most widely viewed movies these days,” he noted. “Clearly there’s a big enough audience. I think it’s cool. Why not have an R-rated version that you release for download or on DVD later? I think that’s smart.”
