'Superman: Legacy': Nathan Fillion To Play A Green Lantern; Isabela Merced & Edi Gathegi Nab Superhero Roles Too

James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman: Legacy” (summer 2025) promises to be the first theatrical entry point for the newly branded DCU. And it has been said that the superhero pic will usher in a heap of various DC Comics characters that will get fleshed out down the road as DC Studios looks to create their own cinematic universe. It turns out that talk is correct, and there is now a big update on what some of those characters will be with new actors joining the cast.

A trio of Marvel comics movie alumni have been selected for roles in “Superman: Legacy.” Vanity Fair first reports that longtime Gunn collaborator Nathan Fillion (“Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3”), Isabela Merced (“Madame Web”), and Edi Gathegi (“X-Men: First Class) have joined the feature film. They’ve been cast in the respective roles of Guy Gardner of The Green Lantern Corps (however, they downplay the GLC connection), Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific.

Gunn has confirmed the castings via a post on Twitter (see below). Fillion has worked with Gunn going back to his feature directorial debut with the horror-comedy “Slither.”

This news follows Gunn securing his two ‘Superman’ main leads of Lois Lane/Clark Kent, as Rachel Brosnahan and David Corenswet landed those parts last month. The filmmaker has expressed his desire to make a more inspirational version of a Superman movie while also confirming they won’t be rehashing the origin story. Lex Luthor is set to be a villain in the film; more could be involved beyond the tech/industrial billionaire. Gunn is said to have been courting Alexander and Bill Skarsgård to go head-to-head against the newest version of the Man of Steel.

Filming on “Superman: Legacy” won’t begin until next year in Atlanta, and Warners has given the movie a release date of July 11, 2025. Given the looming SAG-AFTRA strike this week, any future auditions/tests might be paused, and we might have to wait for any more big casting announcements until that is resolved. Although, that could easily change if they’ve already decided.
