Probably the least beloved of the Marvel properties, “Thor” and “Thor: The Dark World” aren’t bad films so much as instantly forgettable. In a cinematic universe where each film is a building block, those films in particular feel the most disposable and the least rewatchable. However, Marvel fans cheered when Taika Waititi was hired to direct “Thor: Ragnarok,” hoping the filmmaker would bring the same irreverent touch he delivered with “Hunt For The Wilderpeople” and “What We Do In The Shadows.” However, comic-book heads may be in for a surprise.

Yesterday, Disney dropped details about their 2017 slate, and the eagle eyes at The New Zealand Herald noticed something interesting — Taika Waititi doesn’t have a screenplay credit for “Thor: Ragnarok.” Instead, it’s Eric Pearson (“Agent Carter,” plus a handful of Marvel One-Shot shorts) who grabs the credit, with the story going to Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost (they recently paired up for “Logan“). Does this mean Waititi can’t bring his spirit to the proceedings? Of course not. But it perhaps suggests he’s working within the parameters of the Marvel machine, so it’ll be interesting to see how much of his voice comes through.
But for those seeking the comedic charms that Waititi displayed with the “Team Thor” short over the summer that showed the Asgardian hero’s day-to-day life with his new roommate Daryl, there’s good news on the horizon. Heroic Hollywood points to word suggesting that upcoming “Doctor Strange” Blu-ray release will include another chapter in the “Team Thor” story, which would be awesome.
“Thor: Ragnarok” opens on November 3rd, and “Doctor Strange” hits Digital HD on February 14th and home video on February 28th.
