While the studio might’ve had a crappy year with its very expensive superhero movies, Warner Bros. are likely ecstatic at how its horror pictures turned out. “Lights Out” was a surprise hit, and James Wan delivered again with “The Conjuring 2,” which has spurred a spinoff movie. It’s not the first time the franchise has branched out its scares: Following “The Conjuring,” the studio gave the creepy doll from the flick its own standalone pic with “Annabelle,” and now it’s getting a followup.

In fact, it’s “Lights Out” helmer David F. Sandberg who is directing this entry, and while plot details are zipped up for now, I can’t imagine they’re much beyond “the-creepy-doll-is-back-and-the-jump-scares-will-be-louder.” But hey, audiences love this stuff, and they’re cheap and quick to make —it’s a studio executive’s dream.
