Quibi, the streaming service that still baffles even those subscribed to it, has dropped a trailer for its upcoming remake of The Fugitive. Kiefer Sutherland (“24”) and Boyd Holbrook (“Narcos”) star in this update of the 1963 television series and the 1993 film, both of the same name, adapted by Stephen Hopkins, the creator of “Most Dangerous Game” and co-executive producer of “Prison Break.”
Of course, the core concept, which finds an innocent man on the run, desperate to clear his name, is kept intact. Also returning is the role of the obsessed detective pursuing him through the city, this time played by Sutherland (whose agitated cop yelling at surveillance video will likely remind of Jack Bauer). What the Quibi version promises (or perhaps, threatens) to add are ideas on how social media exacerbates falsehoods, as the main character Mike Ferro is publicly accused of a crime he didn’t commit. There’s an irony in a streaming service exclusively made for smartphones hosting a show warning about the dangers of smartphones, but at the same time, it’s perhaps the clearest route to follow in order to distinguish its version of the twice-told cat-and-mouse tale.
“When a bomb rips through the Los Angeles subway train he’s riding on, blue-collar Mike Ferro just wants to make sure his wife, Allison, and 10-year-old daughter, Pearl, are safe. But the faulty evidence on the ground and “tweet-now, confirm-later” journalism paint a nightmarish picture: it looks to all the world that Mike was responsible for the heinous act. Wrongfully—and very publicly—accused, Mike must prove his innocence by uncovering the real perpetrator, before the legendary cop heading the investigation can apprehend him.”
“The Fugitive” stars Kiefer Sutherland and Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Martinez, Tiya Sircar, Brian Geraghty, Genesis Rodriguez, Glenn Howerton and Keilani Arellanes. The series is set to premiere on August 3, 2020.
