Will “The Invite” be A24‘s big hit of the summer? If the film’s success at Sundance earlier this year is any indication, it certainly will be, but it’ll need to overcome the tepid response to Olivia Wilde‘s previous film, “Don’t Worry Darling.” Is four years enough time to rinse out the bad taste left from that movie? Audiences will find out in a week, when “The Invite” hits select theaters before opening nationwide on July 10.

Still, it’s hard to argue with the critical praise Wilde’s latest received at Sundance (even though The Playlist wasn’t wild about it, grading the film a C in our review), and that’s the impetus behind A24’s press for the comedy. The latest on that front? A new first-look trailer at the film, featuring its stars breaking down its setup and how “everything is on the table” when a dinner party among four neighbors goes to some unexpected places.

Joe and Angela’s marriage is on thin ice. When they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbors for a dinner party, the night spirals into unexpected places. Have they reignited the spark or lit the match that burns it all down?
“The Invite” stars Wilde, Seth Rogen, Edward Norton, and Penelope Cruz. Wilde directs a script she co-writes with Rashida Jones, based on the 2020 Spanish film “The People Upstairs” by Cesc Gay. Producers on the film include Ben Browning, Megan Ellison, and David Permut.
So, will “The Invite” be the crowd-pleaser A24 hopes it’ll be this summer? Don’t expect Wilde’s latest to be a smash hit like “Backrooms,” but this one should do well when it hits select theaters on June 26. Watch the official first look for the film below.
