Mads Mikkelsen is an established stateside star at this point in his career, but that doesn’t stop him from occasionally starring in films made in his native Denmark. In fact, Mikkelsen been working with Danish director Anders Thomas Jensen and actor Nikolaj Lie Kaas, who he works with on his next onscreen role, for nearly his entire acting career. The three collaborate on Jensen’s latest film, “The Last Viking.”

In the black comedy, Kaas and Mikkelsen star as two siblings whose search for long-buried (and forgotten about) heist money leads them on an unexpected emotional journey. And this one sees Mikkelsen in one of the loopiest roles of his career: a man suffering from dissociative identity disorder who believes that he’s John Lennon from The Beatles.

Anker is released from prison after serving fifteen years for robbery, only to learn that the stolen money was buried by his brother, Manfred- and that Manfred can no longer remember where it is. As the two set out to recover the missing loot, their search turns into an increasingly chaotic and unexpectedly emotional journey about identity, family, and all the damage left behind.
Along with Mikkelsen, “The Last Viking” also stars Kaas and Sofie Gråbøl.
Anders Thomas Jensen writes and directs “The Last Viking.” Producers on the film include Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Sidsel Hybschmann. “The Last Viking” had its world premiere out of competition at the Venice Film Festival last August.
