Ever since the first tease of “The Marvels” way back at the end of the first season of “Ms. Marvel,” we were shown that the film would be a bit of a bodyswap adventure. Through some sort of MCU alien technology shenanigans, the bodies of Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), and Photon (Teyonah Parris) would be constantly swapping places throughout the film. Ideally, this would lead to all sorts of fun story beats and action scenes. Well, as we approach the release of the film (in less than two weeks, believe it or not), we are given a quick look at how “The Marvels” uses bodyswapping in an action scene.
As seen in a new clip released by Marvel Studios, we’re given a peek at an action scene that showcases the bodyswapping between Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel. This allows for Ms. Marvel to fight bad guys in a space station while Captain Marvel is fighting guys in the former’s house, surrounded by he family. And honestly, the action looks pretty slick. Director Nia DaCosta seemingly is doing a great job of highlighting the various powers being used and also hinting at the characters’ individual personalities. Dare I say, it appears this film might actually have a bit of heart? Given that Marvel Studios projects have been focusing more on plot and less on character development since ‘Endgame,’ this is a bit refreshing to see.
Of course, this is only one minute of cherry-picked footage out of a feature film, so it’s impossible to make conclusions based on that alone. That said, all of the marketing so far has shown this could either be a fun, exciting adventure film… or yet another VFX-heavy, plot-driven disappointment. We’ll just have to wait and see.
“The Marvels” arrives in theaters on November 10. You can watch the clip below:
