'The Wager': Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio To Team Up For Another David Grann Adaptation For Apple

Earlier this week, news broke that Apple will likely wait until Cannes next year to premiere Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers Of The Flower Moon,” followed by a summer 2023 theatrical release. Now, it appears that Scorsese’s relationship with Apple and “Flower Moon” writer David Grann may just be getting started.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Apple Original Films has the rights to Scorsese‘s next film, which sees him team up with Leonardo DiCaprio again. Scorsese indirectly teams up with David Grann again, too, as, this time, the director adapts “The Wager: A Tale Of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder,” Grann’s new non-fiction book out next April.

Set in the 1740s South America, “The Wager” follows the surviving crew of a British ship wash up on shore with conflicting reports about shipwreck and mutiny. The British Admiralty set up a special trial to get to the truth, exposing a story of human nature in extreme circumstances.

“Killers Of The Flower Moon,” based on Grann’s 2017 book of the same name, is a true-crime tale that follows the serial murder of wealthy members of the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma. The case is best known for being the catalyst for the creation of the FBI. DiCaprio stars alongside Robert DeNiro in the upcoming film, along with Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladston, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow.

“The Wager” marks the seventh time DiCaprio and Scorsese work together. They’re one of Hollywood’s most dynamic actor-director tandems, with multiple Oscar wins from their efforts together. Previous team-ups include “Gangs Of New York,” “The Aviator,” “The Departed,” “Shutter Island,” and “The Wolf Of Wall Street,” with “Flower Moon” their sixth outing together.

Other filmmakers like to adapt David Grann’s books, as well.  James Gray adapted “The Lost City Of Z” in 2016, while David Lowery adapted “The Old Man And The Gun” in 2018. “Pachinko” and “The Terror” director Soo Hugh also has an adaptation of Grann’s “The White Darkness” in development as a limited series for Apple TV+, with Tom Hiddleston set to star.

Another Scorsese-DiCaprio joint? We might as well mark our calendars. Let’s see how “Killers Of The Flower Moon” ends up before excitement boils over, though.
