When will Ryan Coogler‘s “The X-Files” reboot premiere on Hulu? That remains a mystery, as the show only has a pilot order right now, but it feels all but assured that the new series starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel will get made into an entire series. But here’s what diehard “X-Files” fans really want to know: will David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return as original series heroes Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully?
An answer to that question may be in a new Polygon interview with original “X-Files” creator Chris Carter. The outlet asked him about the potential returns of Duchovny and Anderson in Coogler’s upcoming reboot as they discussed the new director’s cut of 2008’s “The X-Files I Want To Believe,” premiering on Hulu and Disney+ tomorrow. Said Carter, “At least, Gillian, I think, is going to appear in the Coogler version. And I’m assuming David will too, so you will see Mulder and Scully there.”
Carter’s comments echo Coogler’s own from late last year, when he provided a demure response to Duchovny and Anderson’s returning in his reboot. “I mean, I can’t… I’m a big fan of Gillian’s, I’m a big fan of David’s,” he said. “That’s all I can say.” Anderson also teased her potential involvement with the show earlier this year at Awesome Con. “We’ve had a few conversations,” the actress said about the reboot. “[Coogler is] such a cool guy, and so talented. And the pilot script is really good. I would say, have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s gonna be f*cking cool. It really is.”
And when one peruses the announced guest cast list of Coogler’s series, it’s evident that this version of “The X-Files” will indeed be f*cking cool. Ben Foster, Amy Madigan, and Steve Buscemi will all appear in the pilot episode. And co-lead Patel teased recently that the new show is a compelling contemporary update to the original’s set-up. “It’s obviously a contemporary show that I think of its time,” said the actor on an interview with the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. “Ryan and his whole team and myself and Danielle were all very aligned in that way, that we love depth. We love everything to have a meaningful context, and, much the same as a lot of great filmmakers like Chris [Nolan], Ryan believes that the audience is intelligent. And he wants to give them as much richness of tapestry as he can. So, yeah, hopefully people will see it.
As for Carter’s involvement in the “X-Files” reboot, he isn’t really; only in an executive producer capacity. In that sense, Carter doesn’t know if Coogler’s new vision of the show will complicate his own plans to continue the original series. “When I see it, I’ll know, and so will the Fox executives,” he said. “They’ll have a sense if these things are going to be in competition or if they are going to be complementary.” Whatever happens, Carter still has some new adventures for Mulder and Scully he wants to make. “I would love to do either another reboot, or another movie,” he continued. “My ideas going forward are big ideas. Whether they’re a TV series or a movie, I don’t know, but I have big plans.”
Whether those happen hinges on how Coogler’s pilot does with Fox execs and whether it gets the go-ahead to become an entire series. And “X-Files” fans wait for the answer to that question with bated breath. More “X-Files,” from both Coogler and Carter, and with Duchovny and Anderson involved? That’s something diehard fans want to believe.
