As promised, Academy Award-nominated writer/director Tony Gilroy (“Michael Clayton,” “The Bourne Legacy”) is not returning to the world of “Star Wars” after the second season of “Andor” wraps up this spring. The filmmaker is lining up his next project titled, “Behemoth!” and it has Emmy-nominated actor Oscar Isaac (“Inside Llewyn Davis,” “Scenes From A Marriage”).
Not much is known about the project other than it’s supposed to be a drama about a cellist (though presumably there’s more). Gilroy is currently shopping the project around Hollywood, and multiple parties are apparently interested.
The “Behemoth!” news was first reported by The InSneider, and insiders close to the project confirmed the news was accurate. However, further details remain under wraps, and where it may eventually land is still unknown.
Isaac was actually Gilroy’s first choice to play Aaron Cross in 2012’s “The Bourne Legacy,” spin-off, so the writer/director’s been eyeing the actor for years. But at the time, Universal felt the up-and-coming actor wasn’t big enough of a name yet to sell to audiences—and they probably weren’t wrong, this was 2010/2011 and Isaac’s biggest role that year was a supporting role in Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive.” Jeremy Renner was super hot at the time, coming off “The Avengers” and “Mission Impossible” movies and two Oscar nominations for “The Hurt Locker” and “The Town.” Hence, the compromise was Renner in the lead, and Issac took a supporting role at the beginning of the movie as another Operation Outcome asset.
Isaac turns up next in Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” sometime in 2025 via Netflix and leads the second season of the streamer’s critically acclaimed series, “Beef,” which was shot earlier this year.
Gilroy, who rose to fame by writing the original “Bourne” trilogy and then took his “Michael Clayton” feature-length debut to eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, is coming off over six-plus years working on the “Star Wars” series “Andor,” which earned eight Emmy nominations in season one in 2023, including Outstanding Drama Series.
Gilroy told The Playlist in an interview last week that he was ready to move on from “Star Wars” after “Andor” concludes. “I think we’re all going to drop the mic here after this one and try to do something else,” he explained. “Yeah, it’s time to do something else.” Hopefully, more details turn up on “Behemoth!” soon.
