The Toronto International Film Festival kicks off next month with a rather tantalizing lineup of films, including the feature film directorial debut of actress-turned-filmmaker Scarlett Johansson with “Eleanor The Great,” which will head to the festival and is set to arrive in theaters on September 26, thanks to distributor Sony Pictures Classics.
We’ve been sent a trailer for the new comedic drama that features the lovable elder actress June Squibb (“Inside Out 2”) leading the cast as the titular Eleanor, with a supporting cast that includes Erin Kellyman, Jessica Hecht, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Synopsis for Johansson’s directorial debut from Sony Pictures Classics:
In “Eleanor The Great,” June Squibb brings to vivid life the witty and proudly troublesome 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein, who, after a devastating loss, tells a tale that takes on a dangerous life of its own. Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut is a comically poignant exploration of how the stories we hear become the stories we tell.
The producing team assembled for the dramedy consists of Johansson, Jonathan Lia, Keenan Flynn, Trudie Styler, Celine Rattray, Jessamine Burgum, and Kara Durrett.
Johansson’s effort, penned by Tory Kamen, debuted and screened earlier in the year at the Cannes Film Festival, which The Playlist ended up reviewing and can be read here.
Squibb, who has notably become rather popular in recent years, developed into a leading actress thanks to the quirky scammer revenge comedy “Thelma” after appearing in projects like “Nebraska,” “Big Bang Theory,” “Hubie Halloween,” and “About Schmidt.”
