It was only a matter of time, and that time is here. Universal Pictures is going to give Bon Jovi, the beloved New Jersey stadium rock band, its own feature film biopic following the acclaimed lineage of the studio that previously tackled N.W.A.‘s “Straight Outta Compton” and Eminem‘s “8 Mile.”
According to the reporting from Deadline, Cody Brotter is being tasked by the studio to pen the script after working on Doug Liman‘s crypto thriller “Killing Satoshi,” and another music biopic for Mike Judge (“Silicon Valley,” “Idiocracy”). Their story on the big screen is said to span their time as struggling musicians trying to get their shot, to playing massive stadium gigs.

Bon Jovi was formed in the early 1980s at a time when flamboyant bands from America and the United Kingdom were making a huge splash, as they were not too dissimilar to groups such as Twisted Sister, Def Leppard, Van Halen, and Mötley Crüe.
Eventually, lead singer Jon Bon Jovi would move on to a solo career, and of course, their music would end up being landmark tunes in pop culture, often used in karaoke bars and sporting events. Other members of the original band include Richie Sambora (lead guitar), Alec John Such (bass), Tico Torres (drums), and David Bryan (keyboards).
Sambora famously married actress Heather Locklear, leading to a public divorce that played out with an annoying amount of tabloid coverage. Alley Sheedy, Cher, and Denise Richards were some of the other well-known women from entertainment connected to the dating life of the guitarist. Having less of a dramatic romantic life, Bon Jovi is said to have had a romance with Diane Lane before ultimately marrying Dorothea Hurley, his high school sweetheart, in 1989. It remains to be seen if any of those folks will have characters playing them in the biopic.
We’re still waiting to learn about a director and cast, but those pieces are set to be announced in the future. The next high-profile music world biopic coming from Universal is Antoine Fuqua‘s “Michael,” focusing on pop star Michael Jackson, and is set to hit theaters next month.
