Even though 2020 is destined to be an unprecedented year in terms of film festivals, with the spring and summer events largely canceled due to the pandemic, it appears that the fall lineup of film events is going to move forward uninterrupted, though perhaps a bit smaller than usual. And in the case of the Venice Film Festival, which kicks off in September, the physical aspect of the event will look pretty similar to years prior, complete with a red carpet and everything.

According to a new report from Variety, a source said, “There will necessarily be fewer movies, but there will be enough titles to guarantee an important edition.”
What that means is anyone’s guess, at this point. A normal year for Venice would include dozens of world premieres and a line-up including multiple awards contending films from A-list filmmakers and stars. And while it seemed to be a longshot a month ago, with the Oscars being pushed later and other award shows following suit, Venice could benefit from studios needing a premier destination to showcase their latest, greatest films.

Though there is definitely going to be fewer films than previous years, one of the biggest aspects of Venice that a lot of people look forward to will likely be there, as always. The Variety report claims that Venice officials are expected to still have a red carpet for filmmakers and stars to walk down during the event, albeit with more regulations and guidelines to promote public health, including socially distant photographers and press.
Sure, it may be a bit silly to worry about the red carpet at a time like this, but one of the biggest aspects of film festivals, each and every year, is the appearance of big stars wearing glamorous outfits. And the best way to ensure that those stars show up is for a red carpet to exist. Therefore, Venice needs to make an excuse for people to show up and look their best.
The 2020 Venice Film Festival is expected to begin on September 2. Hopefully, we’ll hear more about the films expected to premiere at the event in the weeks to come.
