Venice 2024: New Films From Pedro Almodóvar, Pablo Larrain, Luca Guadagnino

If it’s the last week in July it’s time for the Venice International Film Festival to announce its selections. This morning, La Biennale di Venezia did just that officially revealing the already known inclusion of two Warner Bros. releases, Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie à Deux.” But there are other major titles now hitting the Lido including Pablo Larrain’s “Maria” with Angelina Jolie; Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” with Daniel Craig; and Pedro Almodóvar’s first feature length English language film, “The Room Next Door” starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton.

Other world premieres include Halina Reijn’s “Babygirl” with Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson; Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The End” with Michael Shannon and Tilda Swinton; Justin Kurzel’s “The Order” with Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult; Michael Gracey’s long-awaited Robbie Williams musical, “Better Man”; Jon Watts’ “Wolfs” with Brad Pitt and George Clooney; Embeth Davidtz’s directorial debut, “Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight”; Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s “The Friend” starring Naomi Watts and Carla Gugino; Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” with Adrien Brody and Guy Pearce; and Magnus von Horn’s “The Girl with the Needle.” Also premiering is the now seemingly prolific Harmony Korine with “Baby Invasion,” Walter Salles’ “I’m Not Here“; and Athina Rachel Tsangari’s “Harvest” with Caleb Landry Jones.

The president of the in competition jury is Isabelle Huppert. She will be joined by James Gray, Andrew Haigh, Agnieszka Holland, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Abderrahmane Sissako, Giuseppe Tornatore, Julia von Heinz, and Zhang Ziyi. Unlike Cannes whose jury was dominated by Academy members, only five of the nine Venice jurors are believed to be members.

On the television side, a number of accomplished filmmakers will debut their new series at Venice. The selections include Alfonso Cuaron’s “Disclaimer” with Nicole Kidman; Thomas Vinterberg’s “Families Like Hours”; and Joe Wright’s “M. The Son of the Century.”

Earlier this week, the Toronto International Film Festival unveiled a majority of its programming slate including world premieres of Angelina Jolie’s “Without Blood,” Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl,” Marielle Heller’s “Nightbitch,” John Crowley’s “We Live In Time,” Rachel Morrison’s “The Fire Inside,” and Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths.” Thanks to how TIFF designates its premieres, many of the films that will debut or screen at the Telluride Film Festival, which occurs during Venice and right before Toronto, have already been determined. The New York Film Festival, which is less focused on world premieres and, instead, selecting the best of new cinema, announced that RaMell Ross’ “The Nickel Boys” will open their showcase on September 27.

The 81st Venice International Film Festival will run between August 28 and Sept. 7. Look for complete coverage on The Playlist.
