Over the weekend, the world was exposed to the first full trailer (does a three-minute-plus clip count as a trailer for a short film?) to the upcoming action film “F9” (aka the ninth ‘Fast & Furious’ film with a terrible title). If nothing else, the trailer proved that there’s still, pardon the pun, plenty of gas left in the tank of the ‘Fast Saga,’ as we’re introduced to new villains, old friends coming back from the dead, and more. So, who can blame Vin Diesel for already planning the future of the franchise past “F9?”

Speaking to TotalFilm (via GamesRadar), Diesel was asked about the future of the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise. And he’s not only planning to perhaps conclude the main “saga” with the 10th film but is actually toying with the idea of splitting the conclusion into two parts.

“I started planning for ‘Fast 10’ before we started filming ‘Fast 9.’ Very much so,” Diesel said. “The universe is so robust and so rich with talent and rich with story that, on one level, it’s totally feasible to have spinoffs, and I think that’s something that is inevitable. Universal deserves it because of how much they’ve invested in this little saga, and it’d be good to give back to Universal. And for the fans, should ‘Fast 10’ parts one and two be the conclusion, it would be nice for this world to continue for generations to come.”
Where to begin?
First, it’s not at all surprising that Diesel has already started work on ‘Fast 10.’ If you actually thought for a second that “F9” was the end of the series, you’re nuts. So, let’s not fault the guy for wanting to keep the momentum going.
That being said, do we really need the 10th entry in a self-described “saga” to be split into two parts? The whole two-parter thing has pretty much been shunned because of diminishing returns in recent attempts to do that, highlighted by ‘The Hunger Games’ final films. Sure, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” were basically two parts of the same story, but they are definitely two films that exist separately and can be watched independently of each other.
Is that what Diesel has planned for his big send-off? Do we really think that he’ll be willing to ditch the franchise after ‘Fast 10?’ These are questions we’re still years away from knowing the answers to. But hey, if you’re a fan of the films (and no shade if you are—we all have guilty pleasure films), you’re probably down for ‘Fast 10’ being broken up into four parts if it means more Dom and his crew, err, family.
