In recent years, outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the most popular film franchise in the world is probably ‘Fast & Furious.’ With 8 films in the series so far, with a “Hobbs & Shaw” spin-off coming later this year, the series, which began life as a “Point Break” rip-off, is prepping work on a 9th installment, while also looking to spin-off yet another potential franchise, this time focusing on the female side of the universe.
In a new Instagram post from Vin Diesel, the godfather of the ‘Fast’ family, it’s revealed that Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet have been brought into the family to pen the script for a female-focused ‘Fast’ spin-off, which will presumably follow the adventures of Letty, played by Michelle Rodriguez, and a variety of other women.
As mentioned, this new female spin-off of the ‘Fast’ franchise joins the ranks of the upcoming “Hobbs & Shaw” as the first films to branch off from the mothership, so to speak. Whereas “Hobbs & Shaw” is banking on the combined box office strength of both Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba, the female film will have to hope that Rodriguez and whoever else they cast can carry the film based on the popularity of the character from the 20-year-old franchise.
Perlman is probably best known for her work on the first script for “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Beer has only “Sierra Burgess is a Loser” under her belt, but has a litany of projects in the works, including the upcoming “Chaos Walking,” Spider-Man spin-off “Silver Sable,” and the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot. And finally, Robertson-Dworet penned last year’s “Tomb Raider” and is co-writer on “Captain Marvel.”
The announcement that development of a script is commencing comes after an October 2018 video that Diesel shared where he outlined the idea of a female-focused spin-off. In his most recent post, he says that this spin-off is part of three that will be coming from the franchise. We still don’t have word on what the third might be, but considering The Rock has his, it wouldn’t be a huge leap to think that maybe Diesel, himself, is thinking about branching out on his own. Especially considering the apparent beef between himself and Johnson.
