An interesting 02.19.14 update given Paul Schrader‘s recent comments about “Taxi Driver“ and his desire to make sure it’s never remade. “I always maintained Taxi Driver should never to sequel end or remade. Michael Gondry is making me rethink this position,” he joked on FB today.
Remember sweding? The trend that was hot for all of five minutes in the wake of Michel Gondry‘s underrated “Be Kind Rewind” found folks doing lovely, lo-fi remakes and sequels to their favorite movies, and that spirit also informs his upcoming, mysterious sci-fi movie (of sorts) “The We And The I.” But Gondry has found time in his schedule to knock out another sweded movie, and it’s pretty great.
With Martin Scorsese‘s “Hugo” opening in France this week, a helpful reader has pointed us in the direction of Gondry’s homage to “Taxi Driver” that played at the premiere of the film. It’s best you just watch the video yourself, as the surprises are best revealed as they come but we will say this: the “overhead” shot towards the end is pretty great and Gondry makes the most charming, French Travis Bickle you’re ever likely to see. It’s colorful, inventive and just plain fun — it’s pure Gondry through and through.
