Have you noticed pictures of Jennifer Aniston filming a movie rocking a brunette bob? Keep an eye on it, because the film is director Peter Bogdanovich’s (“Last Picture Show“) return to filmmaking after a twelve-year hiatus— his last film was the criminally under-seen 2001 biopic “The Cat’s Meow.” The film is a stage comedy titled “Squirrels to the Nuts.” We reported on the casting of Imogen Poots a few days back, and she joins a cadre of comic actors including Kathryn Hahn and Owen Wilson.
The story tells of a married Broadway producer (Wilson) who tries to convince a call-girl (Poots) to change her life. And with filming underway a bevy of casting announcements for the upcoming movie have arrived including the addition of Rhys Ifans (“The Amazing Spider-Man”) and Lucy Punch (“Bad Teacher”) as a movie star and Eastern European escort, respectively. “Saturday Night Live” alum Will Forte has also climbed aboard as the playwright of the Wilson character’s Broadway show who’s also in love with Aniston’s self-involved therapist character.
The last casting announcement is a nostalgic coup for Bogdanovich, as actress Tatum O’Neal is in the film playing a cameo being kept under wraps. Bogdanovich gave O’Neal her career-defining role as Addie Pray in the 1973 film “Paper Moon,” and her performance would make the actress the youngest Best Supporting Actress winner ever, a title that remains unchallenged. O’Neal last worked with Bogdanovich on his 1976 film “Nickelodeon,” so this will be their first project together in over three decades.
Debi Mazar, Joanna Lumley, Ahna O’Reilly, and Jake Hoffman round out the cast for the movie, which is currently in production in New York for a 2014 release. [THR/THR/The Wrap]
