Despite the all-star cast that includes Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy along with the fact that Hill and filmmaker Kenya Barris also co-wrote it, Netflix’s “You People” didn’t get a ton of love from critics upon its release recently. And sure, the film is in the Netflix Top 10 or whatever, but there’s also the general feeling that audiences were a bit let down by the comedy. Now, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the film is the fact that the big finale kiss between Hill and his co-star Lauren London might have been completely CGI.
For those that don’t know, “You People” is a film that tells the story of a white Jewish man who falls in love with a Black woman. And as is the set-up of many, many comedies over the years, the two lovebirds have to visit each other’s families. As you might imagine, hilarity and awkwardness ensue as the culture clashes make for obvious jokes. But apparently, despite the fact that the characters are supposed to be madly in love in the film, Hill and London don’t really share that sort of romantic chemistry and barely show any affection. Now, adding to the weirdness is the fact that one of the co-stars of the film has revealed that the one time the characters kiss in the film was fake.
Speaking on a podcast, comedian Andrew Schulz, who has a supporting role in “You People,” talked about how he was shocked on set while they filmed the final scene of the feature. In the scene, as it appears on Netflix, the two characters share a sweet kiss. However, on set, it was a very different situation.
“I don’t even know if I should share this shit, but in the final scene, they don’t even kiss. It’s CGI. Swear to god, son,” said Schulz. “I’m there [on set] watching the wedding, and I see them go in for the kiss. And their faces stop like this far [gestures about six inches apart]. And I’m like, ‘I wonder how they’re going to play that in the movie. Oh, they’re probably just going to cut right there.’ But in the movie, you could see their faces come close, and then you can see their faces morph a little bit into a fake kiss.”
After seeing hearing this revelation, it’s clearly CGI that is used for the scene in question. For whatever reason, Jonah Hill and Lauren London don’t actually lock lips. Now, there’s no reason to speculate why that might be, but it is a bit ironic that a film featuring people unhappy with Hill and London being a couple would culminate in a scene where the two actors actually don’t even share an intimate moment and fake it, instead.
“You People” is available to watch on Netflix now. And yes, it probably counts as a watch if you fast forward to the very end.
