‘White Men Can’t Jump’ First Look TV Spot: Jack Harlow & Sinqua Walls Star In The Remixed Hoop Dreams Comedy

If you’re a 90s baby, you’ll certainly remember  “White Men Can’t Jump,” a fun basketball comedy starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson that seems to have grown in stature and reputation. Never an amazing movie, but it was an entertaining one, though, and one that audiences apparently look back with a lot of nostalgia. Is the brand alone enough to jump-start a new iteration of the franchise—is it even franchisable?— or was it really all down to the chemistry between Snipes and Harrelson?

The answer is 20th Century Studios already believes in the brand enough to try. Today, the studio released the first-look image and TV spot from their new version of the “White Men Can’t Jump” comedy. The film will premiere on May 19, 2023, exclusively on Hulu in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ under the Star banner in all other territories. The 30-second spot debuted last night during the 65th Annual GRAMMY Awards, but now you can watch it below.

A remake or reboot, maybe? Well, 20th Century Studios is describing it as a “modern remix.” In the title roles now are multi-platinum rap superstar Jack Harlow and Sinqua Walls, known for “Friday Night Lights,” “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” and “American Soul.” Produced by Kenya Barris, who just wrote and directed Netflix’s “You People,” the film also co-stars Teyana Taylor, Laura Harrier, Vince Staples, Myles Bullock, and Lance Reddick.

The film is directed by the filmmaker known as Calmatic (2023’s new “House Party,” so his second movie of the year), and here’s the official synopsis:

From 20th Century Studios,’ the all-new comedy “White Men Can’t Jump” is a modern remix of the iconic 1992 film that celebrates the streetball hustling culture of Los Angeles. Multi-platinum rap superstar Jack Harlow makes his movie debut as Jeremy, a former star of the game whose injuries stalled his career, and Sinqua Walls stars as Kamal, once a promising player who derailed his own future in the sport. Juggling tenuous relationships, financial pressures, and serious internal struggles, the two ballers—opposites who are seemingly miles apart—find they might have more in common than they imagined possible.

Directed by Calmatic, the movie also stars Teyana Taylor, Laura Harrier, Vince Staples, Myles Bullock, and Lance Reddick. The film is written by Kenya Barris and Doug Hall. “White Men Can’t Jump” is produced by Kenya Barris and Paul Hall; it’s executive produced by Blake Griffin, Ryan Kalil, Noah Weinstein, Calmatic, Doug Hall, E. Brian Dobbins, and James Powers.

The new “White Men Can’t Jump” film debuts May 19, 2023, on Hulu. Check out the first-look image and TV spot below.
