Warner Bros. has said time after time that the money spent on Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of “Justice League” (reportedly around $70 million) isn’t the beginning of a new trend, but instead, it’s a one-time bit of goodwill given to a filmmaker that saw his feature effectively taken from him and turned into something…really bad. But still, fans are looking at the Snyder Cut announcement from earlier this year as a way to show that fan-driven campaigns for director’s cuts of films can be successful, and they’ve moved to get David Ayer’s version of “Suicide Squad” brought to the public. And according to Snyder, he fully supports that idea.

Speaking to John Doe Movie Reviews, Snyder was interviewed about his new cut of “Justice League,” which is expected to arrive on HBO Max in March 2021 (and possibly in theaters). But during that discussion, the idea of the Ayer Cut of “Suicide Squad” was mentioned and Snyder voiced his support, not just for Ayer, but any filmmaker wanting to share their vision.
“I haven’t talked to David about it, but I’m sure I will. I know him quite well,” said Snyder. “I’ve just been swamped because of COVID. But it’s on my list of things to talk to him about. Like, I support any filmmaker who needs to get their version of their movie or their vision sort of seen, because I’ve had such generous support. So, I really would hope that other people would get that same thing.”
There are big differences between what happened with Zack Snyder on “Justice League” and David Ayer on “Suicide Squad.” Ayer was able to fully shoot his vision of the film and even turned in his cut of the feature. However, WB was reportedly not happy with the tone and hired a trailer company to cut together a much different version of “Suicide Squad.” The result is a total mess, for sure. And unlike Snyder, Ayer has said that his version would be much cheaper to finish and wouldn’t require reshoots or additional photography of any kind. So, in theory, it wouldn’t be nearly the undertaking that the “Justice League: Director’s Cut” is.
Of course, it’s impossible to say whether or not Warner Bros. would greenlight a new cut of “Suicide Squad.” That said, if the Snyder Cut takes off in March and is a huge hit, there’s plenty of time for WB to allow Ayer to do his version of “Suicide Squad” before the pseudo-sequel/reboot from James Gunn comes in August. We shall see.
