'Rise Of Gus': Giancarlo Esposito Has An Idea For A Gus Fring-Focused 'Breaking Bad' Prequel Series

Giancarlo Esposito, when you take everything into consideration, is probably the most likely person to be crowned the King of Prestige TV. Not only was he one of the big bads in “Breaking Bad,” but he is currently a villain in not one, not two, but three separate major series, “Better Call Saul,” “The Mandalorian,” and “The Boys.” That’s one hell of a lineup. And if Esposito has his way, he’d add yet another new series to the list, following the early days of his “Breaking Bad” villain, Gus Fring.

Speaking to Esquire, Esposito talked about his time on “Breaking Bad” and his idea for a spinoff of the series focused on Gus Fring. For those that didn’t watch “Breaking Bad” or “Better Call Saul,” Gus Fring is the ruthless business owner/drug kingpin that is definitely someone you don’t want to cross. And in the prequel idea, Esposito has ideas where this mentality comes from.

“I have this whole storyline in the back of my head that he came from political royalty,” said Esposito. “I feel like Gus came from the world of order. And that his order came. He was a military man. Out of the military, he gained the ability to observe. You can’t lead unless you can follow… In my brain, he was high up in a military government. He could have stayed there and ran the country. It was handed to him. But he chose a different path to be his own man and to find his own power, regardless of what he was handed. This is what he chose.”

And to add more legitimacy to his idea, he even has a title in mind, “The Rise of Gus.” Of course, before we even get to the potential Gus Fring spinoff, we have to make it through the first “Breaking Bad” prequel, “Better Call Saul,” which might get filming by March 2021. And in that sixth season, Esposito is “being told I have a lot to do.” So, while it might not be the early days of Gus, it appears that we’ll learn more about pre-“Breaking Bad” Gus Fring in the upcoming season of what we think is the best series on TV.

If “Better Call Saul” begins filming in March 2021, hopefully, that means we can see episodes begin to debut on AMC in the latter part of the year. For now, you can watch Esposito in the most recent seasons of “The Mandalorian” and “The Boys.”
