Supercut Celebrates The Films Of Brian De Palma

Brian De Palma is about as idiosyncratic filmmaker as they come. His singular vision, emulated and influential as it’s been, is unmistakable, no matter the quality of the film therein. Like most directors, De Palma has had his highs and lows. But at his lowest (which, if we’re being exacting and overly general, would span the last 15 years), his films still manage to feel like gems of some sort — heavy on ambition, emotion, and style, even if the overall piece of work is a bit of a mess.

All of which De Palma himself gets incredibly candid about in the excellent doc by self-proclaimed fans Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow, “De Palma” (our review). In Baumbach and Paltrow’s film, De Palma gets a chance to run through it all, unabashedly spilling details about everyone and everything throughout his nearly half-century long career.

But, if you haven’t had a chance to sit down with “De Palma,” a new supercut has arrived that will hopefully tide you over (via A.V. Club). “Brian De Palma In 6 Minutes” is almost exactly what the title portends: a lightning supercut of 40 some odd years of some of the most fascinating filmmaking ever. The video, which was masterfully cut together by Romain Desbiens, serves as a solid reminder for some films we need to rewatch, or, for those not familiar with the full extent of the director’s oeuvre, a great primer. Not to mention that it — as with all such a supercuts — helps to highlight the themes and images that De Palma has continually returned to over the years.
