Making an intelligent, well-crafted romantic drama is no small feat, but writer-director Tyson Caron looks to have done that with with his first feature film “Lovesick.”

In the film, Dash (Jacob Tierney) enters therapy to cope with his depression after a break-up with girlfriend Lauren (Jessica Paré), who gets engaged to Mark Adam Jones (Jay Baruchel) in an awkward moment that happens right in front of Dash. A new woman named Nora, played by Ali Tataryn, enters his life, and he hopes she’s the one that will help him stop thinking about Lauren. Not surprisingly, that doesn’t happen, and he finds himself without either of them. By the end of the trailer, you see a disheveled Tierney show up at the church presumably to break up Lauren’s wedding, something that seems to only happen in movies. While the set-up isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, the tone and performances make it just different enough to work.
Tierney, who also produced the film, is reteaming with Baruchel, who he directed in “Good Neighbors” and “The Trotsky,” so it seems they have a creative collaboration that continues to bear fruit.
“Lovesick” will be released by Entertainment One in Canada early next year. No word yet on a U.S. distributor or date.
